ZEUGMA The Ancient CityZeugma is an ancient city of Commagene; currently located in the Gaziantep Province of Turkey. It is a historical settlement which is considered among the four most important settlement areas under the reign of the kingdom of Commagene. It was named for the bridge of boats, or Zeugma, which crossed the Euphrates there. The ancient city of Zeugma was originally founded as a Greek settlement by Seleucus I Nicator, one of the generals of Alexander the Great, in 300 BC. King Seleucus almost certainly named the city Seleucia after himself; whether this city is, or can be, the city known as Seleucia on the Euphrates or Seleucia at the Zeugma is disputed. The population in the city at its peak was approximately 80,000. In 64 BC Zeugma was conquered and ruled by the Roman Empire and with this shift the name of the city was changed into Zeugma, meaning "bridge-passage" or "bridge of boats". During Roman rule, the city became one of the attractions in

Cats & WomenIt is generally admitted that "Cat" is the symbol of femininity. However I always feel the opposite. Cats and men look like a lot to each other.
Cats are independent, having strong ideas about how things should be, lithe and adaptable, mysterious.
Please look at my collection of Cats and Women from my point of view. You will enjoy

A Gifted Talent XXX...MJDear friends of the arts please allow me to introduce to you MJ and her delightfully "small world" of photographic art.
MJ calls somewhere near Chicago, USA, home and it is there that she finds a new face and look at the Windy City. It is a feather in her cap that in spite of those winds she can capture the most delicate nuances of nature in an expressively poetic fashion. As an artist MJ works through the lens of a camera mainly but lately has begun posting drawings which certainly hint that this artist's well of creativity runs deep.
Many of you know of MJ's fine macro work...and many more should in my honest opinion. You'll come away after a "walk" through her gallery with these words of Mother Teresa in mind (as found on MJ's home page in light of her artistic statement)...""Let no one ever come to you without leaving better and happier...."
They say its a small small world but thankfully there is an MJ in it to bring it into focus for us all. She succinctly shows us through her ca
Features No 101-Fear,the mind-killer...
It is happening all over again. That sickly helpless feeling that spread
with its icy fingers, slowly eating up all faith and hope.
We are frightened of everything. We call it caution. We call it common sense. We call it practicality. We call it playing the odds,
but that's only because we're afraid to call it by its real name,
and its real name is fear.
"Fear is the mind-killer.
Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration.
I will face my fear.
I will permit it to pass over me and through me.
And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path.
Where the fear has gone there will be nothing......Only I will remain."
I'm so very tired of being afraid....
Wonderful gifts from beloved friends!
Lit-Visual Alliance Allied Artwork Feature #2! Hello my darlings! It's time again to show off some of the brilliant Allied Artwork pieces that have been making their way into our Featured Folder over at Lit-Visual-Alliance.
What is the Alliance, you ask?
The Alliance is a project group intended to encourage visual and literary artists to work together. I've felt for some time that the dA Literature Community can at times be somewhat insular - to its detriment. We in the Lit Community are also sometimes prone to griping about the lack of exposure our work receives when compared to that of visual artists. So in the spirit of ^thorns brilliant Complaint Challenge I thought I would try to do something about that. And so the Alliance was born!
This article features piece that have been submitted to our Featured Folder, whi

January's Complaint Challenge - DDsIntroduction
This activity is part of my year-long project to address complaints from the dA community. January's complaint is Daily Deviations!
"I find that the DD system needs to be expanded. Why? Sadly, it has become the only major channel on this site for artists and writers to receive exposure, and the selection choices are limited. On my journal, =Flyvapnet wrote that '[i]t smacks of a good-old-boys system, wherein Deviations are considered for recognition only if they're suggested by those who have an in-crowd relationship with someone in the award-giving hierarchy'. There are great artists out there who don't have any exposure simply because they can't get DDs, and the selections are biased: for example, they almost never include parts of novels. Offering more artists this exposure would help DA with what

You Were Not An Aquarium BoySea-glass became your bones,
brine your blood, and seashells
melded into your skin.
You were not quite an ocean
when you said "This is your sign to love me."
My body was like a building;
tall, cold, almost unbreakable.
I was metallic and sharp,
towering over your waters.
I remember taking your hand in mine,
conch and coral shells scrubbing
my skyscraper wrists, and laughing
about how one day you would
submerge every last bit of me.
Your lips, riddled with argonauts,
found my cheek and I cringed
at the coarseness.
You asked if they bothered me
and I finally told you "I
think I love you."
Red Riding HoodI want to believe people so badly when they say they won’t bite
that I contemplate climbing into their smiling jaws
thinking that it might be better to be split in two than left hanging.
But always, I draw my red hood and flit back into the forest
running in the shadows of pathways, never stepping into clearings
because I’ve spent my whole life in the wilderness
and I still can’t tell the wolves from the woodsmen.
